The first and oldest museum in the Netherlands

Teylers Museum is the first and oldest museum in the Netherlands and stems from the ideals of the wealthy Haarlemmer Pieter Teyler van der Hulst (1702-1778). Discover how his ideals are still relevant today.

Collection

The first objects in the collection of Teylers Museum were collected around 1750 by Pieter Teyler. Of these, mainly coins and medals have been preserved. After Teyler's death, the directors of Teyler's Foundation actively continued collecting. They mainly focus on Western European drawings and paintings, instruments, fossils and minerals, and books. This is how the Art, Science and Library sub-collections were created.
