The Lorentz Formula
A Theatrical Tour of the Lorentz Lab on Friday, Saturday and Sunday
Teylers Museum
Lorentz Lab
Families, Volwassenen
In this theatrical performance on location, two actors take you back in time, to the years when Nobel Prize winner Hendrik Lorentz had his own study and laboratory in Teylers Museum (1909-1928). Here, you will discover who Lorentz was and how important he was to science.
De Lorentz Formule
In his study, Lorentz spent eight years calculating solutions for the Afsluitdijk, the dam separating the IJsselmeer from the Waddenzee. His correspondence with his young admirer Albert Einstein is still on his desk. And you travel even further back in time, to the 18th century, when one of Teylers' highlights, the Large Electrostatic Generator, was installed here at the museum. The machine – sending sparks more than half a metre – drew admirers from around the world, including French emperor Napoleon.
This spectacular performance can only be experienced in the Lorentz Lab. Theatre maker Rieks Swarte studied the life of the incorruptible scholar and condensed Lorentz’s life in an extraordinary theatrical formula.
