[Federico Zuccaro] 301 Manius Curius Dentatus refusing the gifts offered by the Samnites Pen and brown ink, grey wash, heightened with white, on medium tan paper, the recto prepared grey. Spotted all over. Pinhole in centre from compass point. Diametre 192 mm. Inscribed, top left: 52 (pencil). PROVENANCE: Odescalchi; acquired in 1790 (L. 2392). Inv. 1854: unidentified; inv. 1864: F 45 (Zuccaro). INV. NO.: B 79. When they were at war with the Romans, the Samnites attempted to bribe the consul Manius Curius Dentatus. He rejected their gifts, saying he preferred power over those who possessed gold rather than possessing it himself, and went on to vanquish the Samnites in 290 BC. Formerly attributed to Taddeo Zuccaro. Gere tentatively identified the drawing as a design by Federico for maiolica (note on the mount). A plate with this scene is in the Museo Civico in Pesaro; it was produced in the Fontana workshop in Urbino (Mancini della Chiara, 1979, no. 225). There is a studio copy of the drawing in the Uffizi (inv. 917 S).
